Beyond Generations

Abstract Authors commonly categorize peace missions according to different generations: first-generation serving as interposition forces monitor a cease-fire, second-generation with multidimensional mandates, and third-generation enforcement mandates. While the generation typology is useful show development of over time, this article points four main limitations: ambiguity, reductionism, linear connotations, restricted applicability. It proposes an alternative categorization distinguishing between minimalist approach aiming at ending violence, moderate violence installing some form good governance, maximalist addressing root causes conflict. Based on analysis all UN 1991 2020, demonstrates how new classification overcomes flaws presents further advantages related its focus objectives, versatility, potential for statistical analysis. thereby allows more accurate their effectiveness.
